The Challenge: Outdated and Manual Licensing Processes
ORCA Software used to rely on an in-house algorithm to generate annual license keys for ORCA AVA. While this method supported their business model—one-time purchases paired with yearly support—it created significant challenges:
- Manual Effort: Generating and distributing new license keys each year was labor-intensive and prone to errors.
- Limited Flexibility: Enforcing floating licensing (concurrent user access) was difficult, especially as remote work and mobile usage became more prevalent. Workarounds like separate "mobile" or "laptop" licenses complicated the process.
These constraints highlighted the need for a modern solution that could manage floating licensing, automate workflows, and provide seamless access across devices and locations.
The Solution: Licensing Modernization with SLASCONE
In October 2020, ORCA Software partnered with SLASCONE to revolutionize its licensing process. The integration of the SLASCONE Licensing API allowed ORCA to replace their static, yearly process with a dynamic, cloud-based license server.

- With ORCA AVA 26, customers received a single SLASCONE license key valid for the product's lifecycle, eliminating the need for annual key distribution.
- The license server ensures compliance with floating licensing, regardless of the user’s location, device, or operating system.
- The licensing API allowed seamless provisioning and entitlement management.
- Customers benefited from faster, more flexible access to ORCA AVA, boosting satisfaction and reducing support queries regarding licenses.
- Scalability Across Products:
- Beyond ORCA AVA, SLASCONE is being used for entitlement management by AUSSCHREIBEN.DE, a cloud-based, construction tendering platform.
- Data-Driven Insights:
- SLASCONE’s analytics enabled ORCA Software to track installed versions, trial usage, and other valuable metrics, paving the way for further process improvements.

Leveraging its existing Microsoft Azure setup, ORCA deployed SLASCONE in their own subscription, integrating with their existing Azure AD B2C and Azure SQL elastic pools.
Custom UI
ORCA Software developed a custom UI interface for license management. The main motivation behind this, was to be able to combine and visualize information from their CRM/ERP system and SLASCONE in one place.
